20. My Machu Picchu
Where was I? Alone in the twilight zone, on a chunk of rock known to no one. Starless, moonless night was creeping in, obscuring any measure of the size of what lay beneath me, and what path might get me out. Unable to stand, I rolled and stretched, gauging metes and bounds by fingertip, finding no more than drop-off edges. I had fallen to an isolated rock outcropping about the size of a mattress. There was no direction to go but up. And, surging pain in my leg made clear that there was no time to do it but now. (100)
