The squirrel became our squirrel. Free-roaming the neighborhood. Returning home to eat. One Sunday we saw the Reverend walk to church but we never saw him walk home. He later reported that the cutest little squirrel had hopped onto his shoulder while he and his parishioners were saying goodbye. But goodbye is a word not recognized among squirrels and no amount of coaxing convinced the squirrel to leave. When the Reverend tried lifting him off, it bit his hand and ran away. Taking no chances, the Reverend spent the next two weeks hospitalized, receiving every-other-day rabies shots in the stomach. (100)
